Javier Castro, Black On Black - Price on Request

Black on Black 2008-2015 Edition 3/5 +2AP

Exhibited:

XIII Havana Biennale, Havana, Cuba, 2019

Sensitive Constructions: the Latin-American Geometric Experience at the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 2017

Irreversible Simulations, Salle Zero, French Alliance, Havana Cuba, 2009

Two further editions of the video are in institutional collections, the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) and the Kadist Art Foundation, San Francisco, USA

Originally conceived as a stand alone work in 2008, later the artist combined it with a second piece, White on White (2014) and presented them  together as a diptych referencing the suprematist works of Kazimir Malevich. Castro draws inspiration from his native Cuba, looking at the community within which he grew up in San Isidro, old Havana.  His work challenges the boundaries between art and documentary film, his videos grapple with the acute social problems of his local neighbourhood yet are elevated by a strong aesthetic sensibility.
